Springsteen in the USA: 40 Years of Touring as a Study in Spatial Diffusion (by TheTimoneyGroup)
Animated heat map of Bruce Springsteen touring locations from 1973-2012. Each red dot is a performance and the heat effect is generated by a) the location of the show, b) the size of the venue, and c) the overall population within 40km of the show location (e.g. a single arena show in Omaha, NE generates more “heat” than a single arena show in New York City).
A very interesting piece of data visualisation for Spingsteen fans and those interested in the development of music in general, especially the rise of an artist before the modern impact of the internet. As pointed out by openculture.com, the video “draws some interesting conclusions about the nature of “going viral” in a pre-internet age, and about the continuing importance of place, despite its ostensible erasure by the Internet”.
